Particular Microclimate

In terms of microclimate, Abdera offers an ideal environment for growing vineyards: In summer, there is only the necessary little rainfall and the evenings have low temperatures. Also, the composition of the soil contributes to the viticulture, which has been favored by the disintegration of various crystalline rocks and their accumulation in the gentle slopes of the Abdera plateau, which make the soil fertile.

The “Anatolikos Vineyards” in collaboration with expert oenologists and geologists, has chosen the ideal location of the vineyards, so that we take full advantage of the climatic conditions and the soil that will host the crops and highlight our wines.

HISTORY

Abdera is a historic town in the prefecture of Xanthi. According to mythology, the founder of Abdera was Hercules, who gave the city the name of Abdera’s friend, who was devoured by Diomedes’ horses. In terms of historical reality, Abdera was home to many prominent figures of antiquity, Democritus, Protagoras, Leucippus and Anaxagoras, among others.

The area of Abdera

It is the southeastern end of the Abdera basin, 5 km from the shores of the Thracian Sea, in the northern Aegean and northeast of the nearby, world-famous Nestos river delta. , on the outskirts of the Lekani mountains.
Geologically the area is composed of two main rock units:

A) Granite

The granite of Abdera is a plutonium body, of visible dimensions about 1 x 3 km, with the large axis, oriented NW-SE, passing immediately north of Abdera. Granite is medium – acrycrystalline, altered with strong corrosion elements. His age is determined to be Eocene, older than 37 million years.

B) Crystalline rocks

The diverse group of crystalline rocks of the Rhodope mass, specifically of the tectonic unit of Iron Water, which is the main structural element of the abyss of Abdera and extends to the beach of Abdera. This group is dominated by dark amphibolic and biotic gneisses, white-haired quartz glaciores and a few marbles. All rocks are permeated by leukocratic, quartz-astrocyte, muscovite veins of pigmatites. The age of these rocks, except for the gemstones which are probably contemporaneous with the granite of Abdera, is estimated to be Paleozoic (> 250 cm).

The disintegration of the above rocks and the accumulation of materials in the gentle, western and southern slopes of the Abdera basin, causes the creation of the soil cover, thickness and up to a few meters.
